York Leisure

Snowblind, The Falls (Independiente); Saloon, (This Is) What I Call Progress (Track & Field)

JANE Murphy moved west from Leeds, Paul Williams migrated east from Liverpool, joining up in Manchester in 1999 with a mutual love for early Postcard missives from Orange Juice, pre-Technique New Order and the cinematic strings of John Barry. They write, arrange and produce epic pop, a blissful union of pretty melodies, Vitamin C guitars and keyboards, leaping trumpets, pointed lyrics and Murphy's sunlit Sixties' vocals. You could not say they were original; Saint Etienne and Dubstar, Terry Hall and Cinerama have passed this way before but debut album The Falls marks the bright birth of these new Northern lights.  more...

Liars: They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top (Blast First)

The D4, 6Twenty (Infectious)

LIKE a bullet from a gun, this party on the run is entirely about speed. This is rock'n' roll from the punk school - the kind that young tyros like The Hives yearn after or the kind that the Pistols or X-Ray Spex churned out first time round.  more...

Leaves, Breathe (Warner)

SOMETIMES bands are well named, sometimes they aren't. Leaves may not be the most memorable name, but it suits this Icelandic outfit. For just as leaves take on a vast array of different colours as autumn creeps in, so this band offers a similar range of sounds.  more...

Sparta, Wiretap Scars (DreamWorks)

Sparta's follow-up to the Austere EP starts off with guitars that are like Ocean Colour Scene... then in crashes the rest of the band, and the vocals, and it's definitely not OCS! Sparta are another of the post-nu-metal (new nu-metal maybe?) Nickleback-esque-type bands, but unlike some of the soundalikes out there they are good. Really good. They deserve to get somewhere other than just the Kerrang! channel. The fast songs are heavy without being screamingly overpowering (example: Sans Cosm), the softer tracks such as Air are interesting without being ballads, slightly heavier than say Outcast. So Sparta aren't original, but they are a lot better than some of the metal bands rattling around out there at the moment, whatever their prefix. Well worth a spin.   more...
